Advice date:

March - June 2022

Summary

We reviewed the following water sharing plans to assess the extent to which the plans have achieved their environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes, and advised on whether changes to the plan provisions are warranted.

  1. Water Sharing Plan for the North Western Unregulated and Fractured Rock Water Sources 2011
  2. Water Sharing Plan for the Castlereagh Unregulated and Alluvial Water Sources 2011
  3. Water Sharing Plan for the NSW Border Rivers Unregulated and Alluvial Water Sources 2012
  4. Water Sharing Plan for the Intersecting Streams Unregulated and Alluvial Water Sources 2011
  5. Water Sharing Plan for the Lower Murray-Darling Unregulated and Alluvial Water Sources 2011

We recommended that the water sharing plan for:

  • North Western be extended for up to two years to allow time for analysis, consultation and the development of amended provisions.
  • Castlereagh be extended for up to two years to allow time to undertake required analysis, consultation, and development of amended provisions.
  • NSW Border Rivers be extended for up to two years to allow time to undertake required data collection and analysis, consultation, and development of amended provisions.
  • Intersecting Streams and Lower Murray-Darling be extended for up to two years to allow time to undertake required analysis, development, and consultation on the replacement Plans.

The Government supported our recommendations by approving the extension of all of the above plans for up to two years.
